HOMEWORK: Advice for Baruch

I suggest to college to use Amazon’s kindle to replace text books, the device itself cost $300 but the benefits are mind blowingly awesome, students will always remember bring the material to class, bec ause it only weight 10oz and holds a lot of content, no more shoulder pain caused by text books; we save money, no more rip off from bookstores, all kindle version books are cheaper, paperless books are very “green”.

Create a share platform for students to share their notes, strategies, tricks, tips, experiences of any academic-related topics, students can rate for the most helpful document.

Force all students to rate their professors, students who don’t participate will not be able to log on to their student account unless they accomplished the survey.

Add features articles and video about educational developments and new discoveries to the college homepage; make it more interesting so the students would log on more often.

Most important of all, keep everything in 1 place, we do not like to remember zillions of users names and have 10 opened tabs.

HOMEWORK: New vs. Old

New media is always in digital form, for example: twitter and YouTube, users are much more likely to interact and response to each other because the internet makes it very easy to do so, virtual communities and creaitivity are the unique products of the new media, it is very flexible and it relies heavily on the internet. Old media i much more manipulative, consumers/users are usually much diversified and have much less power; they rarely interact with each other and don’t have much contribution to the delivered content. Users of the new media are the subjects, aggresive; and users of the old media are the objects, the passive ones.

HOMEWORK: Modeling reality with virtual worlds.

Virtual worlds have many kinds:

2nd life is the time killer, it is rediculously similar to real life in a sense, you can find Latino Museum, Taj Mahal in black and white versions, fashion desingers and trends like Harajuku and retro funky, 2nd life colleges, global conference, government agencies, business conference, real estate firms, models, news publishers, Puma store, clinic, bar........ People (avatars) can own virtual properties (which cost real life money), meet other residents and participate in many social events. Personally I think this is a real time killer which has very limited extension to real life, there are only 2 reasons that I would visit: 1. To see how nice the graphics are, how real it is. 2. For educational purposes such as training sessions.

This one is much more pratical and beneficial:
Virtual College Fair
It's a virtual arena for parents and students to shop for collge, a 2day real time event. Real coellge admission officers, gudiance counselors, finanial aid experts will be sitting in front of their computeres and help students with any college-related problems. Its looks like a convention center, booths are populated with their logos on the banners, you can "walk" around the lobby, stop by, download boscheres, apply for scholarships, interactive features: real time chat with advisors and current students, go to the main conference room(looks like a lecture hall) and watch the videos, prfessional interviews and onsultants presentations. This is a VERY NICE idea, because it safe parents and students time and traveling cost, they can reach more better choices easier and cheaper. How awesome!

HOMEWORK: Social Networking

Socail Networking is all about communities and has various forms, including:

Q&A: The best example is Yahoo Answers, users can post any, literally any questions and award points to the best rated answer, of course people can rate and answer any open questions and read solved questions. Sometimes you get a very sophisticated answer in great detail and sometimes little wonderful tricks.
Social bookmarking: Save and categorize favorite/ interesting websites(blog, reviews, articles, recipes, online store...) and share with others, people can rate the bookmarks and get access to their own with any computer. Benefits: You can learn by any form of participation: ask, answer or simply just browse, and the best thing is it's
FREE. You can ask embarrassed, stupid sensitive or personal questions which you might not ask in real life and get Practical-human experiences answers.

Social shopping: It's like a personal shopper, share your wish/shopping list and products review, drag others favorite items to be your own, and mix and match outfits before buying, it's easy to navigate specified products such is import grocery or wedding dress, the site allows users to search by keywords tags or by favorite seller. Benefits: Consumers have much more buyer power, we don't just get product info from ads and word of mouth anymore; we can reach more consumers and share our thoughts of specific products which are real, authentic, sincere and much more reliable. On the other hand, consumers can also reach small vendors (those that sell awesome product and don't spend on ads) all around the world, the raise of buyer power also raise the quality of product.

For the 2 examples of social networking above, I see no dark sides, both are all-around beneficial. My forecast of these new media technologies is that soon they will try to merge user names in various sites into 1, so people only have 1 uswe name for facebook, myspace, delicious, youtube and wiki. I think this is a good idea because it is a step closer to the reality, we have only 1 name and it's the same pereson anywhere you search, people tend to be more responsible to what they say when they know that people are aware of who they are. Also I think that mobile technolgy will grow very fast to suit people's desire of getting connected at anytime, not just for checking emails and web browser, phones that can not twitter or facebook will soon be gone as all generations are getting involve much more often.

HOMEWORK: My New Media Class So Far

Many kinds of technology are part of the new media, the most important ones are Web 2.0, mashups, teleconferencing, P2P filesharing, VOIP, mobile 2.0, avatar, mircoblog, Amazon's kindle, 3G, synchronize, wiki, podcast, social networks...etc

New media would not exist if the Internet doesn't exist, all kinds of new media are web based and totally depending on the Internet.

The new media is replacing and enhancing the old media because the Internet allows the gethering and convergence of everything, everyone, anytime and anywhere, as of the Super Grand Central Station that all kinds of vechile and people stop by(bus, jetski, plane, rocket, cab, helicopter, advertisers, 4 year old, bloomers, disabled, TV producers, artists, singers, professors, journalists, loney boy, street begger, millionair, weirdo, geek, nerd, top model, President Obama....

"social networking, with its tremendous communication capabilities and aggressive database development help him beat the overwhelming odds facing him. "

Quote from: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/10/business/media/10carr.html?_r=1&emc=eta1

Everything that you can possibly think of come in handy with the Internet, with all these advantages, old media is imcomparable.

Homework: Wiki vs Blog

Wiki is a community where users can create, share, collaborate and edit about any topic, if it’s existing, people can change it, to a new version or go back to any version before the current one; if it is not, people can create it. Wiki is a continuous on-going process, the content is always changing. The discussion page allow users to collaborate the topic, because wiki is not only written by a single person, the information is more objective compare to blogs, it is also more reliable because every topic in wiki has a list of notes, references and sources which allow readers to trace back. All users are created equal in wiki, since everybody can do anything in wiki, sometimes it can be too much information and the content becomes out of focus, some other good things about wiki: in many languages and ad free.

Blog has more authority and promoting capacity compare to wiki: the topic, message, ability to comment and presentation are chosen by the author, the blogger has full control of what s/he want to see seen/ heard in order to spread the message out; users can only read the post and if possible, comment on it. Blog is also on-going but not over the same topic, but the blogger’s posts. Blog is all about personal experience and opinion, therefore, unlike wiki, references are not necessary, the ultimate sources of the topic it the blogger him/herself. If the blogger doesn’t like any content in the blog, s/he can delete it and users can find no trace of it even with archives.

Importance of convergence in today’s networked world.

The perfect line is the lecture title: The driving force behind the new media, just like the invisible hand” in the free market. How can it be more different? I can totally just replace a few words of the explanation of “invisible hand” in order to explain the importance of convergence to new media. Watch this…

Convergence (invisible hand) is the driving force behind the new media (free market), convergence (invisible hand) is the self-regulating nature of the new media (marketplace). In the networked world (free market), an individual pursuing his own self-interest tends to also promote the good of his community as a whole through a principle that we call “convergence” (invisible hand), each individual makes maximum contribution to his interest area(revenue) for himself maximizes the total contribution(revenue) of new media (society) as a whole. Individual intends only his own interest, and by directing the content (industry) in such a manner as its produce may be the greatest original production (value). By creating the content of (pursuing) his own interest he frequently promotes that of the new media (society) more effectually than when he really intends to promote it. It’s a form of empowerment.

Definition of invisible hand from here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Invisible_hand

How can blog be used for collaboration:
In blogsphere, collaboration can happened through user generated commentary, links to other blogs, and on Technorati, where someone blog about your post(see screen shots below), and chat box with the blog for conversations, or simply ask a question, raise an issue, make a statement in your blog.

New use for wiki:
I think tagging would be a good idea, just like tags of pictures on flickr/ facebook, on YouTube videos, labels in Gmail or sites on delicious, so users can filter content by keywords and makse easy to find relevant materials.
